D. When to apply and the important dates
Applicants submit their applications within the dates (in general):

The application should be done by on-line
An e-mail address is required for application. If you do not have an e-mail address already, apply to e-mail address providers on the internet. Make sure that the address you obtain remains valid for at least 6 months.
If it is the first time you apply for a graduate program, you have to obtain an ‘application number’ and an ‘entry code’ to proceed to on-line application. You can follow-up the progress of your application at the on-line application pages using your application number and entry code.
Application process is started by clicking on-line application (see part F)
When you finish application process, you should FREEZE the application after checking that all is correct and there is no omitted item, you should take a print out and stick your own photograph on it, after all you should bring/send it with other documents required so that they will be brought/sent before the last day of the application to the below address;

When your materials (if there is any missing document or procedure) are received by the Graduate School you will be notified about the receipt of your application within 7-10 days via e-mail. “on-line application”
the application can be started. To obtain ‘entry code’ and ‘application number’ “obtain entry code” button must be clicked and the required information must be filled in. The personal entry code and application number provided for you will be sent by e-mail to you. Those numbers and e-mail should be kept confidentially for your security.
Sessions of Applications
1. Personal Information
On the first page all personal information asked should be filled in the format shown. Unless designated otherwise, foreign applicants are needed to type their passport numbers to file named “TC Kimlik No”. These information should be the same as given in Identification card/passport. If there is any change in personal information (i.e surname change) it should be notified. A permanent address should be given, since the results are sent to applicants by mail.
Middle section refers to Turkish citizens and therefore should be left blank by foreigners.
2. Academic Information
Enter the necessary information concerning the universities, institutes, and colleges etc. that were previously attended and are currently attending. Enter in chronological order starting with the most recent one. Specify dates of entrance and completion with degrees (B.S., M.S., certificates). If the program is not finished yet, give the intended date of completion.
Cumulative GPA(s) for the programs should be entered, specifying the base-value (e.g., 3.50/4.00 or 75/100). If you are currently attending a program, specify your cumulative GPA on the basis of the last semester you have completed.
If your school is not listed in the related field, send an e-mail to

3. Graduate Examinations
Applicants are required to submit score reports for the Graduate Exam(s): ALES (in Turkish) or GRE-General.
The applicants who have applied for GRE-General have to make sure that their scores are forwarded to METU before the indicated last date of application (see section D ). The Institution code for METU is GRE 0692-4. GRE score reports are valid for five years. ALES score repots are valid for two years.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Application without acceptable GRE/ALES score is not possible for Spring -2008 applications.
Graduate Exams

4. English Examinations
Applicants are also required to submit score report for an English proficiency exam approved by METU (TOEFL, METU-EPE, and IELTS). Applicants who have applied for TOEFL have to make sure that their scores should be forwarded to METU before the indicated last date of application (see section D ). The Institution Code for METU is TOEFL: 0692-189. Score reports are valid for two years by the date you are applying..
IMPORTANT NOTE: Application without acceptable METU-EPE/IELTS/TOEFL score is not possible for Spring-2008 applications.
English Proficiency Exams

5. Employment Information
Any working-experience including Military Service will be indicated in the relevant field in the format shown on the pages.
6. Program to be applied
The desired program or department to be applied may be selected from Table-A.
Please notify that City andf Regional Planning, City Planning, Regional Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Building Science, Restoration, Industrial Engineering-Engineering Management, Operational Research are all individual programs, therefore should be applied independently.
7. Applied degree and Field of Interests
Target degree ( MS, PhD, PhD-BS) for the desired program can be selected from Table-A . The Non- thesis programs of GSNAS are as follows,

8.Reference Letters
Two reference letters are required for the application [J2].
9. Letter of Intention
The letter of intention should include a short CV and the background related to the applied department, the awards, the scholarships, meetings, publications. The letter of intention should be in on-line application form. If the given space is not sufficient the applicants can use extra pages.
10. Source of Support
Indicate the source of financial support for the duration of your program. If you have a scholarship or supported by an institution, attach a letter indicating the amount and duration of the support. The cost including tuition fee and other expenses ranges from $6,000-10,000 per annum, so the support whether in the form of scholarship or otherwise should be sufficient to cover these expenses for the duration of the program.
METU at the current time can not provide research assistantship or other financial assistance to foreign students due to legal rules related to foreigners. However Ph.D. students might be entitled to tuition waiver for their assistance in teaching.
11. Checking the Information
Having finished the session(s), use “CHECK” button to see that all the information is correct and no item is omitted/missing. If the form is in its final form, “FREEZE” the form. Please note that no further input/editing is possible once the FREEZE button is used.
12. Print-out of Application Form
After ‘Freeze’ the application by using ‘Print’ button (or using internet browser; file-print), a clear print-out of ‘Final Copy’ must be taken. A photograph must be affixed on it and the last page must be signed. This signature on the Final Copy means that the information both on the print-out and on the online version on the computer are the same and accurate. The information on the print-out and on the online version must be exactly the same. For this reason, no changes must be made on the print-out.

1. Application Form
The application form is the ‘Final Copy’ which is signed and a photograph is affixed on. After freezing the on-line application the "Final Copy" is obtained. The "Working Copy" which may be printed before freezing is not valid.
2. GRE or ALES (photocopy)
A valid and acceptable GRE/ALES score is required.
3. METU English Proficiency / TOEFL (or its equivalent) (photocopy)
A valid and acceptable English qualifying exam score is required.
4. Transcript(s)
Obtain transcript(s) (in English), notarized or attested, concerning your undergraduate and graduate study (in progress or completed, if any) you have undertaken. If you have completed your study, you should obtain two copies of transcript(s). One copy is sufficient for application; the other copy is required during registration when you are accepted to the program.
5. References
Two reference letters are required. Download the related form by clicking references. Reference letters must be given in separate envelopes signed by the refree across the sealed flap of the envelopes.
6. Application Fee

1- How to get the “entry code” and “application number” to start the session ?
To obtain this code and number “obtain entry code” button must be clicked and the required information must be filled in. The personal entry code and application number provided for you will be e-mailed to you.
2-What should be done when the “entry code” has been lost?
If you have lost your entry code click “forget entry code ” button and proceed from there by following the information on the page.
3-How to correct for the identity information if it is incorrect/missing (for METU students/graduates) ?
If identity information appears incorrect, proceed with the information existing and complete the application, however a letter should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office requesting to correct the incorrect/missing information with a photocopy of identity card /passport.
4-What can be done if the application does not 'freeze' ?
This occurs when the compulsory fields are not filled in. For that reason, you need to make sure that compulsory field information should be filled in fully.
5- Is it possible to apply a graduate program without applying to take the English proficiency exam?
A valid and recognized exam is required to be submitted with application.
6- Is it possible to apply a graduate program without applying to ALES/GRE exams?
A valid and recognized ALES/GRE exam result must be submitted with application.
7- Is it possible to start the application process without declaring a valid score received from the English proficiency and ALES/GRE exams?
The application wouldn’t be evaluated.
8- How can be an applicant be corrected if the ‘freeze’ button has been clicked with wrong information entered ?
A letter (together with an e-mail address) indicating the incorrect information should be forwarded to the application address. The letter will be evaluated and it will be decided if the mistake has been done by the candidate's own negligence or carelessness. The candidate will be informed by e-mail. If there is a negligence of candidate the request can only be reprocessed after a new application fee has been paid.
9- Can the 'final copy' be altered ?
The signature on the ‘Final Copy’ means that the information both on the print-out and on the on-line version on computer are the same and accurate. The information on the print-out and on the on-line version must be exactly the same. For this reason no changes must be made on the print-out.
10 What can be done if the "Final Copy" print out format is not proper?
When an improper print out occurs in the "Final Copy" print-out version, the final result should be obtained from another printer. Format corrections shouldn’t be done by means of CUT/PASTE procedure.
11-Can application fee be refunded or application documents be given back if the application is rejected?
The fees for applications are not refundable and the documents will not be given back to the applicant whether the application is accepted or not. This is also valid when the application has been ceased.
12- For which department applications portfolio is required and when and where those should be submitted?
If the candidate is applying to one of the following programs,
then a portfolio containing a selection as evidence of the level of work performed in the previous academic and/or professional career is required to be submitted to the deparment. This procedure is required to be completed in within a few days shortly after the application documents are sent to the related Department’s Head by the Insitute.
If the application is to
Industrial Design
then, the portfolio (if any) is required to be submitted to the Department’s Head during the interview.

14- Is it possible to be registered to more then one graduate program at the same time?
You may apply to more then one graduate program and get acceptance , however you can register to only one program.
15- What to do if your school/field is not listed?
Please see Section F.2 .
16- Is it possible to send the application payment via mail?
Application fee can be paid only by bank transfers as designated in Section G.6. No cashier's check, cash payments etc, are accepted.
[1] (a) The UDS and KPDS English Language exams are not recognized as English proficiency exams by METU.
(b) METU-English Proficiency scores are valid for those who have been a master or doctorate student in METU for at least one semester within the last 4 semesters and readmitted to the same or another master or doctorate programs at METU. However, since TOEFL score has been raised from 192 to 213, the previously taken TOEFL scores should be minimum 213. If the test taken is METU-EPE, photocopy of the result document is not required. It is sufficient to enter candidate application number.

These scores are approximate values. The weighted scores in ALES and GRE points (mean scores and standard deviation values) may differ every year.
